Privacy Policy
This policy explains what Captique collects, why, how long we keep it, and how you can delete it. It covers the iOS app, the Android app, and this website (captique.app).
Contact: support@captique.app.
In plain words
We store the phrases you save and the account needed to sync them. On the free plan, Google may show ads. We do not run our own analytics. We do not keep your photos or recordings. You can delete everything in the app or by emailing us.
Captique is a personal project run by one person. There is no Captique company. Google shows ads on the free plan. Captique Pro removes them.
Who we are
The developer of Captique (“we”) is a person based in Hong Kong. We provide the mobile apps and this website.
If a privacy law asks who the “controller” is, that is us. Email support@captique.app.
What we collect
We only collect what the product needs. Onboarding currently asks for your languages. We do not ask for your age, job, or reasons for learning.
| Data | Where it is stored | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Email and sign-in IDs (email, Sign in with Apple, or Google) | Our servers, after you create or bind an account | So you can sign in and restore your library |
| Guest sign-in ID | Our servers (a throwaway account) | So the app can run without you signing up |
| App language, native language, target language | On your device; synced if you have a bound account | To show the right language and translations |
| Saved phrases, translations, generated memory hints (a mnemonic and example sentences), decks, review history, streaks, daily goals | On your device; synced if you have a bound account | This is the product |
| Monthly counts for translation, memory hint generation, and search by meaning | Our servers, for free bound accounts | To apply the free monthly limits: 180 translations, 120 memory hint generations, and 300 searches by meaning, each calendar month (UTC) |
| Search embeddings (numbers derived from your saved text) | Our servers, for bound accounts | So you can search phrases by meaning |
| Reminder settings (on/off, quiet hours, streak time) | On your device; synced if you have a bound account | To schedule the reminders you turn on |
| Captique Pro status (product, store, expiry) | Our servers, via the stores and RevenueCat | To unlock paid features |
| Support emails you send us | Our inbox until the request is finished | To answer you |
| Feedback you send from the app or captique.app/feedback (whether it is an issue or an idea, the message, optional email, and if you used the app: app version, operating system, and language) | Cloudflare, until we finish the request | To fix bugs and improve the app |
| IP address and an hourly count of feedback submissions | Cloudflare, separate from the feedback message | To stop the form being submitted too often |
Guest mode. Study content stays on the phone and is not synced. Translation, memory hint generation, and search by meaning need a bound account, so they are not available in guest mode. Leaving guest mode wipes that on-device data. The unused guest sign-in may remain on our servers. Guest mode can still show ads.
Purchases. Apple, Google, and RevenueCat handle payment. We never receive your full card number.
What we do not collect
We do not store:
- Photos or a photo library
- Microphone recordings or raw audio
- Precise location
- Contacts
- Advertising IDs on our servers
- Our own analytics or usage-tracking events
- Cookies or tracking pixels on this website
- Your age (that screen is not shown)
We do not sell personal data. We do not use your phrases to train our own AI models or to choose ads. We do not run our own product analytics, crash reporters, or session recordings in the app or on this website. Google may still measure the ads it shows on the free plan.
How we use data
| Purpose | Data used |
|---|---|
| Create and keep your account, and sync your library between devices | Email, sign-in IDs, languages, captures, study records |
| Translate a phrase you save | The phrase text, sent to Google Translate |
| Turn speech you dictate into text | Audio stays on your device; we store only the text you keep |
| Generate a memory hint you request | The phrase text and the two languages, sent to OpenAI. We store the mnemonic and example sentences you keep |
| Show ads when you are not on Captique Pro | The technical data Google’s ad service uses, and the advertising identifier if you allow tracking. Your saved phrases are not sent for ads |
| Apply free monthly limits | A count of translations, memory hint generations, and searches by meaning |
| Search captures by meaning | The phrase text or your search query, sent to Jina to make an embedding |
| Schedule study reminders you enable | Reminder settings; the notification itself is created on your device |
| Check Captique Pro | Subscription status from Apple, Google, and RevenueCat |
| Answer support mail | Whatever you write to us |
| Read in-app or website feedback | Whether it is an issue or an idea, the message, optional email, and device details you send |
| Keep the service secure and working | Sign-in and sync activity needed to operate the account |
We do not use your saved phrases, account, or study records to choose ads or to build an advertising profile.
Where a privacy law asks for a legal basis, we rely on:
- Contract — to run the account, sync, translate, generate memory hints, search, and Pro features you asked for
- Consent — camera, photo library, microphone, notifications, and, where the system asks, the advertising identifier used for ads
- Legitimate interests — security, abuse prevention, and answering support mail, in ways you would expect from a study app
- Legal obligation — if a law or a payment dispute requires a limited record
Camera, photos, microphone, and location
Camera. The camera reads text from books and screens on your device. A still image may be held on the phone while you select phrases. We store the text you save. We do not upload the photo.
Photo library. If you pick an existing photo, text is read on the device. The photo is then discarded. It is not saved in Captique and not uploaded.
Microphone. The app requests microphone access so you can dictate phrases. Speech is converted to text on this device. We do not record your voice, we do not keep audio files, and we do not upload audio. A camera library bundled with the app may also require microphone access.
Location. A camera library bundled with the app mentions location APIs. Captique does not request, collect, or use your location.
Notifications. Streak and inactivity reminders are scheduled on your device. We do not store push-notification tokens on our servers. You can turn reminders off in Settings.
Ads. If you are not on Captique Pro, the app can show Google ads: a banner while you browse saved phrases, and a full-screen ad after you finish a review of at least three cards. Ads appear only after Google’s consent check allows them. On iPhone, the system may ask to track you across apps so ads can be more relevant. The app works the same if you decline, and ads can still appear. Settings includes Ad privacy when Google requires a choice form. Captique Pro does not show these ads. We do not send your saved phrases to the ad service.
Offline study. Phrases already saved on the device can be reviewed, read aloud, and searched by the exact words you typed, without a connection and without Captique Pro. Translation, memory hint generation, and search by meaning need a connection and a bound account.
Clipboard, haptics, and similar device features stay on the phone and are not sent to us.
Where data lives
Captique is local-first. Captures live in a database on your device. If you bind an account and are online, that library is copied to our database so you can restore it on another device.
This website is a brochure, email hand-off (confirm email, reset password), and a feedback form. Those pages do not sign you into a web account. The public site does not set cookies. The private feedback inbox stores the password you type in the browser for that tab only.
Who else sees data
We use other companies only to run Captique. Saved phrases go to Google Translate for translation, to OpenAI for memory hint generation, and to Jina for search. They are not sent to the ad service.
| Company | What they see | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts, synced library, reminder settings, Pro status we store | Hosting, sign-in, sync, and server functions |
| Google Translate | Phrase text and the target language | Translation |
| Google (ads) | The advertising identifier if you allow tracking, and the technical data its ad service uses to show and measure an ad | Ads when you are not on Captique Pro |
| OpenAI | Phrase text and the two languages, only when you request memory hint generation | The mnemonic and example sentences |
| Jina | Phrase text or a search query | Meaning search (embeddings) |
| RevenueCat | A user ID and subscription status for bound accounts | Captique Pro |
| Apple and Google | Sign-in, store account, purchase, and the permissions you grant | Sign-in, app distribution, and in-app purchases |
| Cloudflare | Ordinary website request data (such as IP address) while serving this site, plus feedback you submit | Host the website and store feedback |
Guest accounts are not sent to RevenueCat. They can still see ads.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it, or if we must protect someone from serious harm. If the project is later transferred to someone else, your data would move with it under this same policy until you are told otherwise.
We do not sell personal information. If you allow tracking, Google may use an advertising identifier to personalize ads on the free plan. You can decline that permission, and you can open Ad privacy in Settings where Google offers that choice.
How long we keep data
| Data | How long we keep our copy |
|---|---|
| Bound account, synced captures, study records, reminder settings, Pro status, and free-plan monthly counts | Until you delete the account |
| Guest study content | On the device until you leave guest mode or delete the app |
| Unused guest sign-in on our servers | May remain after you leave guest mode |
| Support email | Until the request is finished |
| Feedback submissions | Until the request is finished |
| Hourly feedback submission count, with the IP address | May remain in Cloudflare after that hour. It is not attached to the feedback message |
| A payment-dispute record | Only as long as the store or the law requires |
| Website server logs at Cloudflare | Whatever short period the host keeps as part of serving the site |
When you delete your account in the app, we delete the account and the related rows we store. That is meant to finish in the same session, not after a waiting period.
The translation, memory hint generation, and embedding companies may keep a short technical copy under their own policies. We do not control that clock. We do not keep a separate archive of your phrases after deletion.
Deleting the Captique app from your phone does not delete your cloud account or cancel Captique Pro.
How to delete your account and data
Apple and Google both require a way to delete an account you created.
In the app: open Captique → Settings → Delete Account, type DELETE, and confirm. You must be online. Unsynced local changes must be synced or discarded first. Deletion is permanent. It removes the cloud account and the Captique data on that device.
On the web (required by Google Play): email support@captique.app from the address on the account and ask us to delete it. We will delete the server account and associated data we store.
Guest mode: use Leave guest mode in Settings, or delete the app, to wipe on-device guest data.
Subscriptions are separate. Deleting your Captique account does not cancel an Apple or Google subscription. Billing continues until you cancel in the store:
- Apple: Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, or apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions
- Google: Play Store → Payments & subscriptions
Children
Captique is suitable for ages 4 and up. It is not a separate kids app. We do not offer a kids version, parental-consent flow, or family plan.
A parent or guardian should create and manage the account for anyone under 13, or under the higher minimum digital-consent age in your country. We do not knowingly collect personal data from a child under 13 without that adult. If you believe we have, email support@captique.app and we will delete that account.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may ask us to:
- Tell you what personal data we hold
- Correct it
- Send you a copy (export)
- Delete it
- Stop some processing
There is no in-app export button today. Email support@captique.app. We may need to confirm it is your account before we act. We will not treat you worse for asking.
You may also complain to a data-protection authority in your country if the law gives you that right.
Security
We use HTTPS and restrict server data to the signed-in account. Session tokens are stored in the device’s secure storage. No method of storage or transmission is perfect. If we become aware of a breach that affects you, we will email the address on the account when we can.
International transfers
We are in Hong Kong. The companies above may process data in the United States, the European Union, or other countries. Those places may not protect privacy in the same way as your home. We use them because that is how sign-in, sync, translation, memory hint generation, search, ads, and store billing work.
Cookies and this website
The public website does not set cookies, does not run analytics, and does not use advertising or social pixels. We do not set cookies for visitors. A “Do Not Track” signal has nothing extra to turn off here.
Confirm-email and reset-password pages only help you open the app. They do not create a website login. The feedback form stores your message on Cloudflare so we can read it. The private inbox at /admin/feedback is not a public account.
Third-party services
Apple, Google, RevenueCat, and the AI companies have their own terms and privacy policies when you use their sign-in, stores, or models. This policy covers what we do.
Changes
When our practices change, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date. For a material change, we will add a short note at the top of this page. We will not hide a real change behind a new date alone.
